"The Funny Thing About Metrics”
Presenter: Nicholas Errico, PMP, MBA, PgMP, PfMP

Presentation Abstract:
It is often said “you don’t actually pay a carpenter per nail when having a deck built.” Why? Because we all know it is not a great way to ensure the deck built is going to be the deck the customer wants completed. As project managers, the question becomes “why do we sometimes take that approach within the professional services world?” Management often sets metrics in an effort to drive performance behaviors; however, some behaviors are in direct conflict with the organizational goals and strategic objectives. Therefore, it becomes imperative that we are aware of the implications of the wrong metrics and what we can do to ensure strategic alignment.
In this presentation, Nicholas will use humor to explore a few funny “non-business” examples of metrics gone wrong, and demonstrate ways we can use metrics to improve and drive performance in business and professional service organizations. In this presentation, you will learn:
- Ways to rethink the implications of metrics when they go wrong in business
- How to identify metrics that are driving unintended behaviors on projects
- How to realign metrics to desired performance outcomes and strategic objectives
