“Influencing without Authority: A Primer
Presenter:Robert S. Rubin, Ph.D.
Presentation Abstract:
More than any other skill set, project managers rely heavily on their ability to influence others successfully, particularly those who do not formally report to them. Indeed, the effective use of influence skills underlies all core project management activities. Yet, many project managers unwittingly rely on influence strategies that are only moderately effective at best or at worst sow the seeds of project resistance. In this session, participants will examine evidence-based influence tactics that deepen relationships and increase others’ willingness to work together.
Knowing Learning Objectives
- Describe how power is used productively to influence others
- Articulate the benefits of mentoring and expanding one’s social network
- Describe the evidence supporting the relative effectiveness of various influence tactics
Doing Learning Objectives
- Use social influence tactics to improve attainment of key goals
- Determine 1 to 2 social influence tactics to engage others in the context of job performance
- Analyze one’s own level of political skills and target areas for improvement
